The Mentorship Multiplier in Business

 By Brian Cassidy, Business Broker

There’s a common thread I continue to see among strong business owners and it’s not just hard work, grit, or even a great idea. It’s mentorship.

The Role Mentorship Plays in Building a Strong Business

I was fortunate early in my career to be mentored by my father and his business partner. They didn’t just teach me how to work, they taught me how to think, how to make decisions, and how to navigate business the right way.

When I started my own business, my father was still there as a resource, helping guide me through challenges that you simply don’t see coming until you’re in it. And over time, I was lucky to surround myself with other strong business owners here in Reno, people I met through EO (Entrepreneurs’ Organization). A friend in the lighting industry, another in lawn care, and another who built and successfully exited an insurance business. Each of them had a different perspective, but all of them pushed me to grow. Looking back, those relationships had a direct impact on my success.

And I see that same pattern today in the business brokerage world.

How Mentorship Translates into Business Value

The owners who build the most valuable, transferable businesses typically aren’t doing it alone. They’ve had people around them, mentors, advisors, peers, helping them avoid mistakes, build systems, and think beyond the day-to-day.

That shows up in:

  • Cleaner financials
  • Stronger operations
  • Less reliance on the owner
  • A business that someone else can step into and grow

On the other side, I’ve seen great operators hit a ceiling not because they lacked ability, but because they didn’t have that outside perspective. That’s one of the reasons I enjoy business brokerage.

In many ways, we get to step into that mentorship role helping owners think through value, timing, and what it takes to successfully exit a business. Not just listing it but guiding them through one of the most important financial decisions of their life.

Final Thoughts

Whether you’re early in your journey or starting to think about what’s next, it’s worth asking:

  • Who’s helping you think bigger?
  • Where are your blind spots?
  • And are you building something that can succeed without you?

Because the businesses that scale and the ones that sell are rarely built in isolation. They’re built with guidance, perspective, and the right people in your corner.

Best,
